Part 1 includes:  Etiology, Morphological Alternations and Imaging/Degenerative Disc Changes/

History and physical examination can be useful to classify young active individuals with non-arthritic intra-articular hip pathology as having impingement or instability. However, the specific type of deformity leading to symptoms may not be apparent from this evaluation. Several radiological indexes have been described in the literature for individuals with non-arthritic hip pathology.

This course outlines the clinical indications, methods, and interpretation of hip radiological images as it relates to physical examination findings for those with non-arthritic hip pathology.

Ultrasound vs MRI. The development of less expensive portable ultrasound machines has opened the market to non-radiologists, while applications for musculoskeletal ultrasound have broadened. 

It is said that selective substitution of musculoskeletal ultrasound for MRI could result in significant cost saving to the health care system. But, is it that simple? What about important issues such as accuracy, variability, education, and competence?  

This course addresses these issues and also compares and contrasts image interpretation, accuracy, observer-variability, economic impact, and education with regard to musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI. 

The ability of MRI to assess marrow signal alterations has enabled more detailed evaluation of vertebral endplate changes, which can be independently associated with back pain. Although mechanical and/or inflammatory etiologies have been traditionally proposed, recent studies raise the question of an indolent infectious etiology, making accurate assessment of vertebral endplate changes by the radiologist increasingly important in determining appropriate treatment options.
