  • The Enneagram is a personality theory describing nine strategies by which the psyche develops a worldview and relates to self and others. Each of the nine types has a basic fear, basic desire, and predictable behavior pattern in times of stress and security all of which shape motivations underlying behavior. The Enneagram has been used by psychiatrists since the 1970s.

The authors summarize the Enneagram theory, review the history and literature validating its use, and suggest areas for application in psychiatry, including diagnosis and psychotherapy.

As the Enneagram becomes increasingly popular, clinicians will benefit from knowledge about the system.

  • The Enneagram is a therapeutic tool that offers professionals deep insight into their client's personality functioning. While the Enneagram is largely applied in psychiatry, psychology and human resources, it is also useful for a wide range of professionals, including medical professionals, who need understanding of the people they work with. People's personality structures often block or inhibit healthy functioning and willingness to change.

To make lasting changes in their lives, people need to understand what currently shapes their judgment and decisions. Medical professionals who work with the Enneagram framework can help patients to move towards greater personal awareness, authentic connection with others and living a meaningful and productive life.

Aim of course / Potential of activity to enhance professional performance

Learning about the Enneagram perspective provides a framework for medical professionals to identify the defensive mechanisms and the implicit assumptions that patients have about themselves and the world, which keep them stuck in detrimental behavioural, feeling or thinking patterns.

This will help to enable patients become more flexible in their strategies, to develop more effective coping mechanisms and a healthier approach to life.

    Module 1 will cover:

Introduction, history, overview and synopsis of the nine Enneagram personality patterns.

  • The Enneagram speaks to the three Social interaction Styles that describe how people get what they want and need in everyday life, and what energises them in social relationships.

These Social Styles are also known as Hornevian styles, referencing the work of psychoanalyst Karen Horney.  While Horney did not work with the Enneagram, her concept of three dominant ways of engaging were applied to the Enneagram through the work of Riso and Hudson.

These three styles (move against, toward and away from) are tactics each Type employs to get their primary needs met by relationships and their surrounding environment.
