The presence of pain after spinal cord injury (SCI) is debilitating, difficult to treat and negatively affects the physical, psychological and social functioning of people with spinal cord injury. There is a high risk of pain medication misuse and poor mental health, with more interference of activities of daily living than the SCI itself. The pain phenomenon in the spinal cord population is not widely understood, with affected individuals prescribed ineffective pain medication as well as pain relief techniques.
The aim of this lecture is to equip rehabilitation professionals with pain management skills for individuals with spinal cord injury.
